This is a DIGITAL sewing pattern for 18th century half boned Stays worn about 1780.
Please scroll down for yardage and pattern information.
The pattern and instructions presented here for late 18th-century stays are based on extant historical garments and patterns. Key sources include Norah Waugh’s Corsets and Crinolines and Patterns of Fashion 5: The Content, Cut, Construction and Context of Bodies, Stays, Hoops and Rumps c. 1595–1795, which together provide detailed evidence of period cuts, materials, and construction techniques.
The stays are made from 4 panels on each side, half-boned and supported by a wooden busk at the center front, which is placed in an extra pocket. This pocket is attached to the inside of the center front. The center front has a lacing at the top portion to allow for some extra width across the breast, a typical feature of the late 18th-century stays.
